The right grout can withstand years of foot traffic, while the wrong choice may crack or deteriorate much sooner. Four of the biggest factors are the tile material, grout joint width, moisture exposure, and foot traffic. Budget, maintenance, and room location also affect the best grout choice.

Not all grouts are suitable for all kinds of applications. Each grout has its place, based on the kind of material used as tiles, the grout joint width, whether or not the installation site is exposed to moisture, and the conditions that prevail in the area where it will be applied. The most frequently used grouts for floor and wall applications at home include cement, sanded, and unsanded. Epoxy and urethane grouts are used when a normal cement mixture would be damaged by water, oil, and wear and tear.

Sanded cement grout is made from Portland cement, fine sand, and water-retaining additives. This is a common type of grout for home tile floors, often seen in kitchens, hallways, and entryways. The sand prevents the mixture from shrinking as it dries, which is important for the wider gaps in question.

It’s cheap, it’s tough, and it shrugs off heavy foot traffic in entryways and kitchens for years. The catch is maintenance: reseal it every year or two, and don’t use polished stone or glass, since sand can scratch those surfaces as it goes in. Narrow joints are out too; the grains won’t pack in tight enough.

2. Unsanded Cement Grout

Best For: Glass tile, marble, polished stone, wall tile, and grout joints narrower than 1/8 inch.

Take the sand out of the sanded version, and what’s left is smoother and far less likely to scratch anything on its way into the joint. That’s why it’s the safer choice for glass tile and polished marble, where even a single stray grain could leave a permanent mark.

It fits neatly into joints and provides a cleaner edge than any sand-filled joint. Its main drawback is durability, particularly on busy floors, where it tends to wear out quicker and will require sealing to withstand water. Wide joints are not suitable for this kind of joint compound because there is no sand to prevent shrinking.

3. Epoxy Grout

Best For: Bathrooms, showers, kitchens, laundry rooms, swimming pools, and commercial flooring.

Epoxy grout does not use any cement in its composition and uses only epoxy and hardener. Because epoxy grout is nonporous, it resists moisture, stains, and chemicals without absorbing them. Thus, epoxy grout does not need sealing.

Grease, wine, bleach, none of it stains epoxy the way it stains a cement joint. Commercial kitchens rely on that, and so do pool decks fighting daily chlorine exposure. Expect to pay for it, though: often two to three times the cost of a bag of sanded grout, with a working window that closes fast once mixing starts. Most homeowners bring in a bathroom remodeling or kitchen remodeling crew for epoxy jobs rather than race the clock solo.

4. Urethane Grout

Best For: Residential kitchens, bathrooms, heated floors, backsplashes, and DIY tile installations.

Urethane grout comes premixed, so there’s no measuring or mixing before application. The greatest benefit of urethane is its ability to conform: It goes with the flow of the substrate and not against it, and this becomes very important when using heated floors.

This makes maintenance easy because stains do not adhere to it, and there’s no need to seal it. The price one pays for the easy maintenance is time and money because it takes longer to cure compared to cement grout and is also more expensive compared to epoxy or furan.

5. High-Performance Polymer Cement Grout

Best For: Busy households, kitchens, bathrooms, and high-traffic tile floors.

This is a good compromise, being relatively simple to apply as far as cement grouts go, while providing greater strength when it really matters for households with children, pets, or a lot of foot traffic in the kitchen. Polymer grouts tend to be slightly more expensive than their cement counterparts and can vary quite a bit from brand to brand in quality. It’s best to check out a manufacturer’s specifications before making any assumptions about their performance.

Furan grout is a resin-based product made for environments that would chew through everything else on this list: constant chemical exposure, grease, high heat, the works. It’s a rare sight in a home, and when it does show up, it’s usually because nothing else could survive what the space throws at it.

Chemical and heat resistance are where it dominates, holding up for years against the kind of daily abuse a commercial kitchen or lab dishes out. That performance isn’t cheap: installation gets complicated fast, pricing sits well above every other option here, and it genuinely needs an installer who’s worked with resin systems before; this isn’t a first-timer’s project.

Seven things really matter when you’re narrowing down a grout. Run through this list before deciding what fits a specific room, tile, and joint size.

  • Tile Material: For porcelain and ceramic tiles, you can use sanded or polymer-based cement grout. Natural stone and glass tiles are different. They need unsanded, epoxy, or single-component grout to prevent scratching.
